Residence rights and visa procedures

Right of residence

  • Freedom of movement of EU citizens

Citizens of a member state of the European Union, another member state of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland enjoy freedom of movement. In concrete terms, this means that you can enter Germany at any time and stay here for up to three months. You can stay longer if you meet the following criteria:

  • Residence permit

If you wish to enter Germany from a third country, you will need a residence permit that is linked to the specific purpose of your stay in Germany.

  • Visa

If you want to travel to Germany from a third country, you usually need a visa. You can apply for this at a local German diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general).

  • Family reunification

To protect marriage and family, spouses and registered life partners, parents and unmarried minor children have the opportunity to move to Germany to be with their relatives. I would be happy to check for you whether the requirements for family reunification are met.
